Hand pipes are the part of the case people spend longest looking at, and the part where picking it up for ten seconds tells you more than any photograph will. Weight, balance, where your fingers naturally sit, whether the carb is on the side you’d want it — none of that comes across on a screen.

What’s in the case

Spoons — the standard shape, a bowl at one end and a carb on the side. Most people’s first piece and most people’s everyday piece.

Chillums and one-hitters — straight, no carb, pocket-sized. For when you want something small and simple rather than something to look at.

Steamrollers — open at both ends, a bigger hit, less forgiving. Buy one because you want it, not because it’s your first.

Silicone — unbreakable, dishwasher-safe, far cheaper to replace. Less pleasant to use than glass and nobody pretends otherwise, but if a piece lives in a bag or a truck it’s the sensible answer.

What to look at before you buy

Thickness. Glass is measured in millimetres and it is most of what decides whether a piece survives a year. 3mm is thin and will not survive a knock. 5mm is the sensible middle. Above that you’re mostly paying for weight.

The carb. Left or right matters more than people expect. Hold it the way you’d actually hold it before you decide.

Thick glass at the bowl rim. That’s the part that takes heat and the part that chips. A thin rim is where a cheap piece gives itself away.

Colour-changing glass does change — that’s fuming, silver or gold worked into the glass, and it darkens with use. It is not a defect and it is not a cleaning failure.

Keeping it

Isopropyl and coarse salt, shaken and rinsed until there’s no smell left. Do it on a towel, not over a hard sink — more pipes die in a kitchen basin than anywhere else. We keep Formula 420 and the rest of the cleaners on the accessory wall, plus pipe brushes and screens.

Come and hold a few

Ask whoever is at the counter to get the case open. Pick up three, put two down. It takes two minutes and it’s the whole reason to buy glass in person rather than from a photograph.
